The deadline for entering the writing contest, originally posted on June 6, 2012, has been extended to midnight (Pacific Standard Time, USA) on June 26, 2012. I’ve reposted the contest instructions below. If you send your entry to me by e-mail please include your name and contact information, as well as your blog URL. This information is for me alone and will not be included with your entry when it is given to the judges.
Hurry. Time is running out.
Writing Exercise Contest
This exercise only takes 10 minutes. It can be memoir, poetry, a piece of fiction or non-fiction, sci-fi, fantasy or kid-lit. Whichever genre you choose get your paper and pen — or computer — and set a timer for 10 minutes. Use the following words:

Here are the rules:
1. Use all five words. You don’t have to use them in the order presented. 2. Plurals and past tense forms ARE allowed. 3. Thinking about what to write should not be done before the timer is started. 4. No self-editing or amendments allowed unless they occur during the 10 minutes of writing. 5. It’s okay if your piece doesn’t seem finished — writing wihin the 10-minute time limit is the focus.
Post the completed exercise on your blog and link it to mine, comment on this blog that you’ve posted the exercise, or send me an e-mail asking me to stop by your blog to look at your entry. On June 27, 2012 I’ll present the entries to my writing group and let them choose the best one.
The prize isn’t large — one of my favorite composition books and a fancy pen — but the experience in extemporaneous writing under pressure is a great benefit.
The contest closes June 24, 2012. The winner will be announced July 2, 2012. On the following day I will post the exercise I wrote using the five words above. The winning entry will be posted on my blog on July 2, 2012.

Have fun and good luck!
